Chapter 10

“So, you’re Hudson’s boss?” Fergie tried anything to break the ice between her and the rather formidable looking man who was currently driving her back to her apartment.

“Yes, in a matter of speaking. Did you just call him Hudson?” his lips quirked.

“Yeah, that’s his name, right?”

“I suppose it is,” the stranger nodded.

The stranger was handsome, she supposed, but not like him. Hudson Stormwolfe was in a class all by himself as far as she was concerned. Too bad he was batshit fucking crazy.

She closed her eyes to catch her breath for a moment. There was something really weird about what they’d all been talking about in that dining room. Shifters and mate bites, it was like something out of a fantasy novel.

“So, uh,” she began, “I need to pick up my roommate’s truck at the library,” she said and rattled off the address.

“Sure,” he nodded, “I think we have other things to discuss as well.”

“Like what?” she pretended she didn’t know what he was talking about. Somehow it seemed easier.

“Like Shifters and the fact that you mated one of my Guardians.”

“Okay, just hold on, what the hell are Shifters? And what is that word mated supposed to mean? Like sex? Cause I am not discussing that with you,” her inner sass demon had just woken up it would seem, but Fergie was on a roll now and she was not going to stop until she had some answers, “and when you say guardian, do you mean like your ward? Like something out of a Bronte novel?”

The man had the audacity to chuckle. He pulled up at the scene of the crime, where she’d been attacked the night before and Fergie shuddered.

“Is this where it happened?”

“Yes,” she said and swallowed down a lump of fear.

It tasted bitter, but for some reason she knew she was safe now. Perhaps it was because of the giant black wolf that was watching her from behind the fence. She didn’t think to mention it, merely met the beautiful beast’s piercing blue eyes before turning back to the man who’d driven her back to the parking lot where she’d left Jessenia’s truck.

It didn’t matter. He seemed to already spot the wolf in the marshes, and he was not happy about it. His eyes flashed gold and her inner warning bells went off, but still, she felt the need to speak up for the beautiful animal.

“It’s not hurting anyone,” she said ready to defend the creature with fur so dark it reminded her of a midnight sky.

“No, he’s not hurting anyone, but he’s also disobeying a direct order,” he grunted.

“Look, what’s your name?”

“I am Kingston Baldric. I am one of those Shifters, Furio was talking about. Like Hudson Stormwolfe, or Storm as we call him. He is one of my Guardians, and no, I don’t mean in some gothic novel kind of way. In fact, he should have explained all of this to you last night before he bit and mated you,” he was talking to her, or so she thought, but for some reason his eyes were glued on the black wolf.
